Ceramics Classification by Attachment

The four types of ceramic-tissue attachment are determined by the bodies reaction to the material as well as the method of attachment

Morphological Fixation

  • Dense and Nonporous

  • Utilizes the press-fitting method

    • Forcefully insert the material or implant inside the body

Biological Fixation

  • Porous and inert

  • The porosity of the ceramic material allows for a tissue to grow into the implant fixing to the body

Bioactive Fixation

  • Dense nonporous

  • Ceramic chemically bonds to the bone

  • This type of implant is not bioinert since a reaction is expected

Resorbable

  • Dense and porous/nonporous

  • In this instance, the ceramic implant is temporary and will slowly dissolve as the new tissue takes its place
