Ceramics Classification by Attachment

The four types of ceramic-tissue attachment are determined by the bodies reaction to the material as well as the method of attachment
Morphological Fixation
-
Dense and Nonporous
-
Utilizes the press-fitting method
-
Forcefully insert the material or implant inside the body
-
Biological Fixation
-
Porous and inert
-
The porosity of the ceramic material allows for a tissue to grow into the implant fixing to the body
Bioactive Fixation
-
Dense nonporous
-
Ceramic chemically bonds to the bone
-
This type of implant is not bioinert since a reaction is expected
Resorbable
-
Dense and porous/nonporous
-
In this instance, the ceramic implant is temporary and will slowly dissolve as the new tissue takes its place
